I like to look for simple phrases…quotes from books, movies, or people I know…that have a profound impact on my way of thinking/my life. I think if we can store a few little quotes here and there…just keep a few profound ones at forefront of our minds…they can enrich our lives…determine which of our character traits remain strong…even get us through rough times.
I know a lot of people already keep “quote books,” and stuff…and you may already have this one…but I love it so much! I just think it’s so very, very true…that we should remember it, apply it, and let it refine our way of thinking. It’s from “Anne of Green Gables,” and I think Lucy Maude Montgomery was absolutely inspired to write it.
“It’s not what the world holds for you…it’s what you bring to it.” - Anne Shirley
I try to stay conscious of this truth every moment…every time I come in contact with someone. We should endeavor to bring good to the world…not sit and sulk over what the world hasn’t given us. It’s a thought-provoking, marvelous quote that makes us think. I hope you’ll add it to your personal quote collection if it isn’t already there!
You know…the right quote can change our way of thinking…bless us with an epiphany…and change our lives! Sometimes the simplest line from a book, movie, speech, or poem…can literally make us endeavor to be a better person by causing our mind to linger, ponder and assimilate a good character trait into our very soul!
Therefore, like many people, I collect quotes…and the other day…while watching one of our favorite family movies with my husband and son…one of those quotes hit me with profound measure! The movie is “Secondhand Lions”…an adorable movie about a neglected boy who ends up living (and learning) from his two eccentric uncles. As you know, I love Robert Duvall anyway…and his portrayal of “Uncle Hub” is this movie is excellent! (His portrayal as “Gus” in the movie “Lonesome Dove” reminds me so much of my grandpa…it nearly makes me cry!) There’s a point in “Secondhand Lions” where Robert Duvall offers a life lesson to Walter…his nephew. The speech is profound…and I feel…entirely true! I think, the contents of this little speech can be life-altering. So…I wanted to share it with you…
“Sometimes the things that may, or may not be true…are the things that a man needs to believe in the most…that people are basically good…that honor, courage and virtue mean everything…that power and money, money and power mean nothing…that good always triumphs over evil…and I want you to remember this…that love…true love never dies. You remember that, boy. You remember that. It doesn’t matter if they’re true or not… you see…a man should believe in those things because those are the things worth believing in.”
Of course…it’s best if you hear Robert Duvall’s delivery of the line in the movie. This is profound to me!
